Australians living in regional areas will have increased access to ultrasound technology thanks to new technology.

World first robotics technology developed by Deakin University, in partnership with Telstra, when released to market will allow patients to undergo ultrasound diagnostics remotely.

The system does what others can't - translate the sense of touch to the operator.

Ultrasound is a type of imaging that uses high-frequency sound waves to look at organs and structures inside the body - mostly the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and liver.

The new technology will be unveiled on Friday in Melbourne.
