You're more likely to end up in hospital playing Aussie rules than rugby but neither is as hazardous as go-karting, a study has found.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report has found that a third of all sport injuries occur playing some code of football.

However, wheeled sports, such as motorcycle riding and go-karting, are by far the most dangerous, with the percentage of participants needing hospital treatment more than two-and-a-half times that of the football codes.

Aussie rules had the highest rates of the footy codes, with about 1.32 per cent of players taking a trip to the hospital in 2011-2012.

That's just higher than rugby union and league, which had 1.29 per cent of players hospitalised.

Participants in those sports stayed in hospital for half a week on average.

Cycling, motor sports and equestrian events had the highest proportion of life-threatening injuries.
