'Whitewashed' tourism ad yanked from social media

A Central Queensland council has been left red-faced after it was forced to pull its new national tourism video from social media, amid claims it "whitewashed" the city's indigenous culture.

Rockhampton Regional Council's "Rockhampton Can" campaign aimed to promote the region's liveability and tourism potential.

The video quickly attracted reaction on social media, with Indigenous locals saying it was a "whitewash" and "didn't celebrate the Darumbal people".

Within a few hours the post was deleted from all platforms.

Mayor Margaret Strelow admits the under-representation of Indigenous people in Council's marketing material has been an issue for some time.

"If we look at our marketing material for the last two years we'll probably find that it hasn't represented the diversity," she said.

Ms Strelow has taken full responsibility for the video, which was one of six to be rolled out in the coming weeks.

"I'm the Mayor, I saw it and didn't pick up on it immediately and I should have... we have to do better," she said.

Rockhampton Regional Council says it will now adjust the campaign to be more culturally inclusive, but wouldn't say when the new video will be re-launched.
