Robert John Adams found guilty of the murder of Sydney nurse Mary Wallace in 1983

Sydney man Robert John Adams has been found guilty of the murder of nurse Mary Wallace in 1983.

Adams was charged with Ms Wallace's murder in 2013 after forensic technology matched two hairs found in his boot to the victim's DNA profile.

Ms Wallace was last seen in Adams' car leaving a Crows Nest bar in the early hours of September 24, 1983.

Adams had told police he'd tried to have consensual sex with Ms Wallace, 33, in his car before falling asleep and waking to find her gone.

In delivering his verdict in the NSW Supreme Court today, Justice Richard Button said he was satisfied the hairs found in Adams' car belonged to Ms Wallace.

Justice Button said he was satisfied Adams had also raped or attacked at least three other women in 1975, 1976 and 1978.

"Whilst alone in his car with the deceased early in the morning of 24 September 1983, the accused choked or strangled her with the intention of having sexual intercourse with her without her consent," Justice Button said.

"That voluntary act of the accused caused her sudden death, and thereafter the accused disposed of her body, which was at some stage in the boot of his vehicle.

"I reject all other explanations for the entirety of the evidence placed before me beyond reasonable doubt.

"In other words, the accused treated the deceased very much as an object, just as he had treated three other young women."

There were hugs and tears from Ms Wallace's supporters in the public gallery when the verdict was handed down.

Adams was on bail during the trial but that has now been revoked.

He will be sentenced in February.
