Hunt for driver who bit man's finger so deeply he needed surgery in road rage incident

A driver had his finger bitten by another motorist so severely he needed surgery during an alleged road rage incident in Melbourne's east.

Police say the 63-year-old man was driving in Upwey when the speed limit was reduced to 40km due to backburning in the area.

Another driver began tailgating the alleged victim and honking his horn, before both drivers came to a stop at an intersection between Napoleon and Wellington roads.

The drivers began arguing but remained in their cars before turning onto Wellington Road in Rowville.

The offending driver allegedly swerved in front of the victim and stopped, before getting out of his car and approaching him.

He then allegedly pushed the man, 63, and bit his finger, before driving towards Wellington Village.

The victim drove himself to hospital and had surgery on his injured finger.

Police are now hunting the alleged biter, who has been described as a white man aged in his 40s driving a light-coloured Kia Rio.

He was allegedly driving with a woman in the car.
