Several buildings at Melbourne's RMIT University evacuated after threats received

Five buildings at Melbourne's RMIT University have been evacuated after threats were received.

The threats related to buildings 11, 13, 55, 56 and 57 at the Melbourne CBD campus, the university said in a statement. 

"RMIT has received threats relating to several buildings (11, 13, 55, 56 and 57)," the statement read.

"The matter has been referred to Victoria Police.

"As a precaution, these buildings and immediate surrounds will be closed until further notice while security sweeps take place.

"Classes and exams in those buildings are being rescheduled.

"RMIT regrets any inconvenience that this closure may cause but we take health and safety very seriously."

Victoria Police confirmed it was investigating the threats.

"Police have been conducting safety checks at an education facility in the CBD today," a police spokeswoman said.

"As a precaution several buildings were evacuated.

"Police have been liaising with the facility throughout the day in relation to the matter. 

"As it is currently under investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further."
