Riot on agenda in Labor PNG talks

Labor's immigration spokesman Richard Marles has "no doubt" the riot at Manus Island will be raised when he holds asylum seeker talks with Papua New Guinea's foreign minister.

Mr Marles will on Tuesday travel to PNG to discuss the regional resettlement agreement with Rimbink Pato, saying he wants to hear first hand about processing arrangements.

Australia and PNG recently agreed to hold monthly ministerial meetings on the processing of asylum seekers, with delays at the Manus Island centre believed to be the reason for the deadly February 17 riot.

Mr Marles said reasons for the violence, which led to the death of asylum seeker Reza Berati, would be broached during the discussions.

"I've got no doubt that broadly will be raised, and of course in the context of the regional resettlement arrangement we'll talk about what has occurred at Manus Island and how that facility is being run," he told ABC radio.

"I'm certainly keen ... to get an understanding of how those resettlement plans are progressing. I think it's important in terms of how the facility is run."
