Debate over right to disconnect as rule change looms

Workers will soon be able to refuse contact from their workplace outside their designated hours when a new law comes into effect in the coming weeks.

Employees at large businesses will have the right to refuse contact outside their work hours from August 26.

This will include emails, calls and text messages from both bosses and third parties such as clients and contractors.

Australian Council of Trade Unions president Michele O'Neil told 9News Melbourne the change is necessary.

"This gives workers the right to say 'no, that's not okay, I need a life as well'," O'Neil said.

However, some business groups argue unintended consequences will follow.

"This is going to be a nightmare for employers and employees, because nobody knows what these laws mean in reality," Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox said.

Small businesses will face the new rules from August 26 next year.
