Melbourne road re-opens after damaged crane causes chaos

A bustling Melbourne road is now open after a faulty crane and wild weather closed it for two days.

Bridge Road was re-opened to traffic between Church Street and Punt Road just after 4pm, VicRoads said in an official statement.

Lennox Street, Richmond remains closed to traffic in both directions between Goodwood Street and Bridge Road.

Earlier today, a rescue crane and a second smaller rescue crane were erected by engineers to assist with the dismantling efforts.

Residents were warned by engineers the dismantling would take hours.

The broken crane, which teetered on edge for more than thirty hours, is being disassembled piece by piece, with the delicate operation expected to be complete by 5.30pm today.

Two workers were hoisted into the air by the two other cranes to help dismantle the damaged crane.

Meanwhile, it's been revealed Worksafe Victoria received a number of complaints over unsafe conditions at the crane site before yesterday.

Michael Clark of Clark Cranes said yesterday the arm of the crane had been left too high.

"If it's left too high, the wind can actually grab the boom and push it backwards, which it has done unfortunately," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology earlier today thankfully revoked a severe weather warnings for Victoria, which offered respite for emergency services.

The SES has been inundated with more than 700 calls for help over the last two days, many of which were for wind damage and trees falling down.

"Things have calmed down this morning, the winds are light and we don’t expect those to increase over the next couple of days," Victoria SES Acting Chief Deputy Officer Mark Cettell said.

"We'll have mild conditions today and into tomorrow."
