Residents urged to be vigilant as crews battle Blue Mountains fire

Cooler temperatures should bring relief to firefighters battling an out-of-control bushfire in the Blue Mountains.

More than 200 firefighters have been battling the blaze overnight in the Warrimoo and Blaxland areas.

A watch and act alert remains in place for residents in the area.

Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said while conditions had eased, total fire bans were in place from the Hunter region to the Queensland border.

“They are focusing on a spot fire that’s breached containment down under the power lines between Florabella Street and the substation – that’s going to be a focus of their attention today,” he said.

“And also deepening the back-burning operation to get a strong containment on this fire, taking advantage of the more favourable weather conditions.”

The fire has burnt between 60 and 90 hectares.

The advice for residents today is to be vigilant for smoke and any loose embers.

Mr Fitzsimmons said resources would be dispatched in the northern parts of the state as the hot air mass moves towards the Queensland border.
