Residents told to stay inside as toxic smoke bellowed from housefire in Brisbane

Residents of a Brisbane suburb were told to stay inside as toxic smoke bellowed from a lithium-ion battery fire.

The home on Sirius Street in Cooparoo, in Brisbane's inner south, caught alight at about 7pm last night, with the fire quickly spreading to the roof, causing it to collapse.

Fire crews believe the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery inside an electric scooter.

Queensland Police had to issue a warning to nearby residents as toxic smoke bellowed from the flames.

"Residents on Sirius Street and surrounding areas are advised to shut windows and remain inside due to a house fire that has produced toxic smoke," Queensland Police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"Emergency services are on scene and urge the public to stay away from the area during this time."

The family inside managed to escape without injury.

The fire was extinguished overnight, but crews remain on the scene today as the home is still smouldering from the heat of the fire.

"We had up to 12 BA (breathing apparatus) wearers to extinguish the building, but it became too hot and we had to only protect the exposures and not go internal because the building was collapsing," QFES firefighter Peter Lund said.

"They worked very hard, especially in these muggy conditions."

An official investigation will be launched into the cause of the fire.
