Residents devastated as Haberfield houses demolished for WestConnex

Residents in a Sydney suburb are distressed after houses were demolished to make way for the controversial WestConnex project.

The Haberfield properties were reduced to rubble, as the state government pushes ahead with the $16.8 billion project.

Unable to stop the planned destruction of the homes, locals expressed their frustration.

“I’m really upset. Even though I knew it was coming, it’s really sad to see those houses come down,” Sharon Laura, from the WestConnex Action Group, told 9NEWS.

“To see the dust, to hear the noise – to taste the dust,” she said.

Ashfield mayor Lucille McKenna said residents never felt like they had been fully informed.

“I don’t understand the need, unfortunately, because I don’t think the government have never really ever given us the true details of why this road is proceeding.”

The NSW government says the project will ease congestion, reduce commuting times and will have created almost 10,000 jobs by its completion.
