The Australian Republican Movement has rushed to congratulate their former national chairman ahead of him becoming Australia's 29th prime minister.
ARM national chairman Peter FitzSimons says Malcolm Turnbull, who chaired the movement from 1993 to 2000, is one of the country's leading advocates for an Australian head of state.

"The Republican Movement now looks to Malcolm Turnbull to complete our nation's journey towards independence," Mr FitzSimmons said in a statement.
