Renters face more pressure than homeowners

AUSTRALIA DIVIDED BY A HOUSING CRISIS:

NATIONWIDE:

* No cities provide affordable rental for low income households

* Working singles are best off in Brisbane or Melbourne, and worst off in Sydney or Adelaide

* Working families are best off in Melbourne or Brisbane, and worst off in Hobart or Sydney

NSW

* In Sydney almost all renters struggle, while across NSW renters in every major centre face housing stress (30 per cent or more of income on rent)

VICTORIA

* Melbourne better for renters than Sydney but still unaffordable except in airport corridor and outer suburbs, while regions show poor affordability

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

* Perth better since the mining boom ended but still largely unaffordable, while regions have improved but mining regions remain unaffordable

TASMANIA

* Hobart one of the least affordable places to rent in Australia because lower incomes mean lower rents are relatively worse than other capitals, while Tasmania overall is affordable outside Hobart and Launceston.

QUEENSLAND

* Unaffordable overall but Brisbane most affordable city for low-income households, though inner-city is high-earners only. Mining regions have improved since 2012.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

* Adelaide among the least affordable cities, especially for working singles, while SA's regions have the best affordability.
