Remains found in WA house gutted by fire

Human remains have been discovered in the charred remnants of a house destroyed by fire south of Perth.

Arson squad officers were called to investigate after two homes were destroyed by a fire in Wittenoom Street, Collie that started just before 4am (WST) on Tuesday.

A resident of one of the neighbouring properties, a man in his 60s, was immediately reported missing.

Police confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that a body had been discovered but said it was still to be identified.

Neighbours say the houses burned "like a tinder box" despite the efforts of locals who attempted to extinguish the blaze with garden hoses.

Police said its cause was not suspicious and that a report would be prepared for the Coroner.
