Australians can now register to attend commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli battle of Lone Pine.

The government isn't running a ballot as it did for the centenary of the landing but there will be a limit of 5000 places because of the small size of the Lone Pine commemorative area.

Veterans Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson said some of the fiercest fighting of the Gallipoli campaign was at Lone Pine in August 1915, with more than 2000 Australian casualties over four days and seven Victoria Crosses awarded for bravery.
