Redraw abolishes seat for Labor's Butler

Federal Labor frontbencher Mark Butler will have to find a new seat after a redistribution abolished the electorate of Port Adelaide.

South Australia is losing a seat in parliament due to national population shifts, leaving a "disappointed" Mr Butler to consider his options, having held the seat since 2007.

"'The Port is perhaps the best-known and most iconic part of South Australia," he said on Tuesday.

"I know that the Port is a resilient community whose spirit and character will shine through, regardless of the federal seat in which it lies."

As well, the seat of Wakefield will become Spence, named after voting system reformer Catherine Helen Spence.

A by-election in the South Australian seat of Mayo will still be held on the 2016 boundaries.
