A man has been charged with two counts of murder after two men were found dead inside a Sydney unit, described by police as a "very difficult and confronting" crime.

The 41-year-old was arrested and charged on Monday after the bodies of two men, aged 32 and 52-years-old, were allegedly found with "significant injuries" inside a Cleveland Street unit in Redfern just before midnight on Saturday night.

Detective Superintendent Rodney Hart said the complex is "two terrace units side by side that has been converted into a boarding house with access from the rear yard".

"We do believe one of the victims was on the phone triple zero while police were on route to assist," he added.

Detective Superintendent Hart said it was "a very difficult and confronting crime scene".

Their investigation led to a 41-year-old man being arrested at a unit on the same street on Monday.

Police searched the unit where he was arrested, seizing a number of items, before the man was charged with two counts of murder.

He was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court today.
