Queensland Police's Facebook post on Ramadan sparks debate

A Queensland Police Service Facebook post wishing the public Ramadan Mubarak to mark the start of the Muslim holy month has sparked fierce debate online.

"From all of us, to all in our Muslim community observing the start of the holy month of Ramadan tonight," the post read, along with an image wishing users Ramadan Mubarak, a greeting somewhat equivalent to "Happy Ramadan".

The innocuous post yesterday has since racked up more than 3000 comments, with dozens demanding to know why QPS hadn't wished the public a Happy Easter.

Wading into the perilous world of the comments, the police social media team was quick to remind users that they had done just that – as they had for Hanukkah, Chinese New Year and other significant holidays.

A flood of positive comments soon outweighed the negative, with cheeky users hoping for a birthday shout-out also rewarded.

Another user wanted to know when they were being wished a "Happy Catholic Day".

"Double check with the Pope & come back to us. Happy to oblige if it's a real thing," QPS replied.

The witty and knowledgeable responses from the police social media team drew praise.

"Whoever is responsible for writing replies to some of these comments..... you sir or maam deserve recognition," one user wrote.

Another wrote: "Want cheering up? Check out these comments and some of the absolute BURNS Queensland Police Service is doing. Whoever is behind the screen is my new hero!"

Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is month of fasting and deep spiritual reflection for Muslims.

An estimated 600,000 Muslims in Australia are observing Ramadan.
