Rain delays start of Birdsville races
Rain has inundated the Birdsville race track (9NEWS)
More than 32mm of rain has fallen in remote south-west Queensland in the past 24 hours, delayed the start of Birdsville’s iconic race meeting.
Racing was due to start tomorrow, but organisers have pushed those races back to Sunday, with Saturday’s races still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
Birdsville Race Club president Gary Brook said the track will be looked-over in the morning.
“We are going to reassess the state of the track….and look to get someone there early, in order to drain the water,” Mr Brooke told the ABC.
“Then we’ll reassess things from there.”
The event isn’t expected to be cancelled at this stage.
Hundreds of people are in Birdsville for the race meeting, which is one of the biggest annual tourist attractions in outback Queensland.
