Raid, crash to top Shorten campaign

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's election campaign has been derailed with questions hovering over a federal police raid and a car crash.

Mr Shorten is expected to expand further on the Australian Federal Police operation at Labor senator Stephen Conroy's offices over alleged leaked NBN documents.

The Labor leader on Thursday night said he'd have more to say about the incident later but described it as an extraordinary development.

He is also likely to be pressed for more detail about a car crash near a scheduled media event he was to hold in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The opposition leader was to talk to Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent and Labor candidate for Paterson Meryl Swanson on Thursday afternoon about problems with the notoriously dangerous stretch of Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow.

As their cars pulled over on the signal of an AFP officer standing at the side of the road, a car overtook the convoy and collided with an oncoming car.

A younger woman involved in the crash suffered head injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital, while another woman and her son who were not hurt were invited into Mr Shorten's car, where he comforted them for about half an hour.

Mr Shorten on Friday will keep his campaign focused on the NSW central coast where he is expected to attend a forum with locals for a Q&A session.
