Query over allergy labels for soy, wheat

Allergy labels for certain soybean and wheat products could soon be a thing of the past under a new proposal by food safety regulators.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand is seeking submissions on a proposal to remove mandatory allergen labelling requirements for certain foods, such as glucose syrups and distilled alcohol made from wheat and some soy products.

"In some cases processing means products are essentially stripped of allergenic proteins, making them safe for consumers who have an allergy to that protein," the regulator's chief executive Steve McCutcheon said on Wednesday.
