Queenslanders in for scorching weekend as Sydney enjoys cold front

Southern Queenslanders are being warned to prepare for a scorching weekend heatwave.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a top of 35C for Brisbane on Saturday, while Ipswich is tipped to hit 39C, Windorah 43C and Goondiwindi 42C - more than 10 degrees above average.

But it is only the beginning of the hot weather, with forecaster Jess Carey predicting similar heat waves will be commonplace in the next four to six weeks.

Yesterday Sydney sweltered through its hottest November day in 33 years.

Temperatures in the city increased by seven degrees in 10 minutes during the afternoon, hitting 40.9 degrees at 3.05pm, close to the all-time November record of 41.8 degrees set in 1982.

Sydney Airport reached 42.8 degrees at 3.09pm, making it the hottest November day since 1982 when it reached 43.4 degrees.

Temperatures rose even faster in the west, reaching 27 degree at 9.30am, above 41 degrees at 1pm and a top of 41.3 at around 2.30pm.

It wasn't until after 7pm last night that a cold front swept through - dropping temperatures by 20 degrees in a couple of hours.
