Rugby league supporters in Queensland and Victoria will be hoping a "window of opportunity" to host an NRL grand final in Brisbane or Melbourne turns into a reality.

Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt said the government was in talks with NRL executives to play the event out of Sydney while ANZ Stadium undergoes a $1.6 billion refurbishment.

Mr Pitt said yesterday there may be a "window of opportunity" and it was something he was keen to pursue.

The Victorian government has long insisted blockbuster sporting events belong in Melbourne and sports minister John Eren has reportedly said the offer was there.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed there may be some substance to the idea, telling the Nine Network it would "look at all the possibilities".

It comes despite NSW Premier Mike Baird posting on Facebook that his government had secured content agreements with various codes, including 20 years of NRL grand finals.

The NRL Grand Final has never been held outside of New South Wales before.
