Three men are on the run after escaping from the farm of a Townsville correctional facility.

The three prisoners disappeared from the low-security North Queensland prison some time between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Monday night.

The trio left no evidence of their escape and it's unclear which direction they travelled in after leaving the jail.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Hicks said it's possible the men had walked off the farm, and police believe a car may have been waiting to pick them up.

"We believe they all left in a group last night," Hicks said.

"Looking at the evidence we think they've just walked off the farm and have been assisted by someone to leave the area."

The escapees have been identified as Layne Rex Newman, Les Noel Noble, and Preston Donald Zane Quakawoot.

He is described as being 177cm tall with brown eyes and black hair, with an arm tattoo and "loyalty" tattooed on his right hand.

Noble was serving a four-year sentence for armed robbery and Quakawoot was serving nine months for assaulting police.

Noble is described as having a light build, brown eyes and black hair with an X-Men symbol tattoo and the word "fame" tattooed on his left wrist.

Hicks said members of the public should not approach the men if they see them.

"Any time someone escapes from a correctional centre their desire is not to go back," he said.

"If they are approached by members of the public there could be some danger there."

Members of the public are instead urged to call Crime Stoppers or Police Link and triple zero in the case of an emergency.
