Queensland Police Union calls for weapons licensing system review after tragic shooting

The Queensland Police Union has called for a review of Australia's weapon licensing system after the devastating shooting incident that killed six people, including two of their own.

Queensland Police Union head Ian Leavers has told Today a comprehensive look at weapon licensing protocols needs to take place to best prevent any future shootings.

It is still unknown how the shooters got the "considerable weaponry" they had when they carried out the ambush attack at a Wieambilla property, about 300km west of Brisbane, on Monday evening.

Leavers has said while "there are more questions than answers" about what happened, it needs to be considered whether the national weapons database can be better.

"Should it be better where people move from state to state?" he said.

"You need uniformity right across the board."

"If things can be done better, all states need to work together so we have the best system available, so we have the best intelligence, which will keep the community of Queensland and the rest of Australia safe."

Leavers said having information about gun possession was important in keeping police safe when they were out doing their job.

"Because these tragedies should not take place," he said.

"We are not used to seeing this in Australia. This is what we hear about in country's like the United States and we need to be very careful. But we need to analyse that and that will be done in-depth."

Leavers said plans for a vigil for fallen offices Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow were still being arranged with their families.
