Australia Post inquiry to examine if network can continue to deliver
The federal government announced on Friday the future of Australia Post will be investigated by a committee of MPs.
Communications Minister Anika Wells has asked the parliamentarians to examine the national postal network’s performance as it battles falling letter numbers, higher delivery costs and competition from e-commerce companies.

Australia Post reported a $107 million loss last financial year.
Wells says upheaval in consumer behaviour were challenging the commercial viability of what she described as a “beloved institution”.
“That’s why I’ve asked the house committee to explore how we can better support a sustainable and accessible postal service that delivers for all Australians.
“Changing consumer behaviour and commercial conditions present significant challenges to the sustainability of our national postal service, reflecting experiences globally.”
Everyday Australians, businesses and stakeholders will be invited to provide feedback, with the goal of ensuring the postal network meets community requirements.
Australia Post has attempted to balance burgeoning parcel deliveries as mail volumes shrink.
The postal service hit record highs in 2025, delivering about 111 million parcels across November and December, an increase of 7.6 per cent from 2024, as people continued to embrace online shopping.
Letter deliveries have been reduced to every second day in a bid to save costs.
