Queensland's federal budget wish list

WHAT THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT WANTS

* $100 million for a new Townsville stadium. The funding, already promised by the federal Labor opposition, will match the $100 million pledged by the state Labor government.

Townsville's current 1300SMILES Stadium, home of reining NRL champions North Queensland Cowboys, is woefully inadequate, prompting the team's co-captain Jonathan Thurston to call for a new home ground during his victory speech last year.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said he's open to funding the stadium, but hasn't yet made any firm commitments.

The project is fast becoming a political football.

* Funding commitment for $5.2 billion Cross River Rail project.

The state government recently announced a third iteration for a second river rail crossing in Brisbane, labelling it as the state's number one infrastructure priority. But with the business case not expected until mid-June, the state government can't even say how much money it wants or requires from Canberra to make it happen.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has pledged Commonwealth funds to help the project go ahead, but Mr Turnbull has indicated he wants to wait until he sees the business case. For this reason, a funding commitment is probably more hopeful than expected this budget.

* Roads funding. Once again, federal Labor has opened up the cheque book.

Mr Shorten has promised $200 million to widen the Ipswich Motorway, which will match state funding that's already been committed to the project.

That's on top of $168 million already promised to fix the notorious M1/Gateway merge in Brisbane's south.

Although the federal government is yet to commit funding, Mr Turnbull has indicated there is likely to be some money in the budget for the M1 upgrade after being asked about Labor's promised funds.
