Radioactive device stolen from ute in Ipswich

Police in Queensland have issued an urgent warning to the public after a potentially dangerous piece of mining equipment was stolen from the back of a ute.

The device, known as a portable density moisture gauge, was stolen from a vehicle in Bundamba, Ipswich on Tuesday.

It contains radioactive substances and could pose a serious risk to the health of anyone who comes in contact with it if it is mishandled.

The gauge is used by miners and geologists for surveying and police believe someone has seen it on the back of the truck and taken it, not knowing what it is because it looks expensive.

Authorities are warning people if the device has been dumped somewhere and someone does locate it, to not touch it or even go near it and contact police immediately.
