Brisbane residents to protest over noisy nightworks

Residents of an inner-Brisbane suburb say incessant overnight construction noise from a new school is affecting their community's health.

Dutton Park locals are planning a protest to demand the Department of Education to stop the nightworks on Brisbane South State Secondary College.

Building work on the new school typically begins around 7pm and finishes at 4am.

Dr Andy Stamatiou lives near the building site and says the noise has forced his wife, who works as a phlebotomist, to move out due to chronic sleep deprivation.

"The drilling, the jack hammering, the beeping vehicles - I could be up for like four or five hours," Dr Stamatiou told 9News.

"My wife, she actually has moved into her mother's house for the time being because the noise is just too much."

The Department of Education says the project's builder, Broad Constructions, is working on road upgrades at night to reduce traffic disruption in the area.

"The Department understands that Broad Construction has already responded to community input by minimising the impact of night works where possible, including removing speed humps on Grantham Street to reduce vehicle noise, and programming more disruptive activities earlier in the evening," a Department of Education spokesperson said.

"The Department has received complaints from two people about the scheduled night works."

The nightworks are scheduled to end in March next year.
