Controversial Queensland MP Billy Gordon has suffered a mild heart attack.

The member for Cook, accused last year of abusing two former partners, fell ill on Friday night and was taken to hospital on Saturday.

While Mr Gordon did not face charges for his alleged actions, he was ultimately pressured to leave the Labor party and now sits as an independent.

He is in a stable condition and has been in contact with colleagues.

“I felt some tense feeling around the chest area on Friday last week, and my breathing was unusually difficult. I didn’t think too much of it, assuming it was just work-related stress and tiredness. We did have some very hot days in Queensland," he said in a statement.

"On Saturday, I flew back to Cairns from Brisbane and went straight to my GP. I took his advise and presented myself to the hospital. After some tests, a surgery procedure was done on Saturday evening and I was out in the recovery ward soon-after. I feel much better. Big difference in my breathing and heart function but a bit sore in the arm.

“I am in great spirit and looking forward to resuming duties soon. I should be discharged before end of the week.”

The Queensland Police Service claimed in September last year that it would not be pursuing charges in relation to the claims of domestic violence, owing to insufficient evidence.

Mr Gordon claimed he had never previously engaged in intimidating, controlling or violent behaviour towards women.
