Noise complaint forces Queensland man and 300 parrots out of home

A Queensland man has chosen to leave his home of two decades rather than get rid of his 300 pet birds following a neighbour's noise complaint.

Roy Jones, 54, told A Current Affair he was "extremely angry" following the news of the complaint and the subsequent council inspection.

"I thought I had the freedom to do what I like as long as I don't offend anybody," he said.

Mr Jones has been breeding birds for more than 40 years, and at the time of the complaint had more than 300 on his property.

Moreton Bay deputy mayor Mike Charlton said on a block the size of Mr Jones's, 20 birds was the upper limit.

However, Mr Jones said he never considered he might have too many.

"If I had my way, I'd have a bird zoo," he said.

Although he told A Current Affair he would pay rent on more Council land to start that zoo, he and partner Karen Davis instead decided to move to a secret location to live in peace.

"I'd rather go with my birds," Mr Jones said.

RSPCA media advisor Michael Beatty said it was "disturbing" that the bird numbers got so high.

"While we appreciate that this gentleman obviously does love his birds, no doubt about that, the fact they've got to these numbers is very disturbing, disappointing and frankly isn't very responsible," he said.
