Palaszczuk pledges $100 million to protect Great Barrier Reef

Queensland opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has pledged an extra $100 million to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

“This is a national world icon,” she said on the campaign trail today.

“We must protect it now and for future generations.”

She said the Great Barrier Reef contributed $6 billion and 60,000 jobs to the economy.

Labor says water quality is the key to its protection, setting a target of reducing pollution by 80 per cent in the next decade.

Ms Palaszczuk said she did not yet know how that would be achieved, but a task force would be dedicated to finding out how.

So far, Labor has focused on the environment, education and employment during it’s campaign, not the state's finances.

However, Ms Palaszczuk says that will change on Friday.
