Queensland Health under fire after surgery performed on wrong patient

Queensland Health has come under fire after it was revealed a patient died or was seriously injured after doctors performed surgery on the wrong person.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli brought attention to the incident, which appeared in a government services report.

"In 2019 to 2020 a patient was seriously harmed or died after the wrong surgery was performed on the wrong patient," Mr Crisafulli said.

The details in the report were limited and did not mention the hospital where the accident took place, or the surgeon who performed the operation.

"Queensland Health was the only health system in the country where this occurred," Mr Crisafulli said.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath today said she was unaware of the incident.

"I'm certainly happy to look at the particular incident, it was a very general statement made," she said.

"Sadly there are times when things go wrong, sometimes there are adverse reactions that sometimes leads to a loss of life."

Ms D'Ath added similar incidents had occurred under LNP premier Campbell Newman.

"In the 2013-14 year, two people involving procedures wrong patient wrong body part resulted in major injury or loss of life."
