Queensland Firebirds score $30m netball centre after grand final win

Queensland's first ever purpose built netball stadium will be constructed at the home of the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games.

While the champion Queensland Firebirds are the toast of the town after last week's grand final victory, right now they don't have a court to call "home".

But that will soon change with the Queensland government outlining plans for a $30m indoor netball centre in its first major Budget announcement.

"We think that this is a facility that is long overdue, we know that we've been lagging behind other states for a couple of years," Acting Premier Curtis Pitt said.

The facility will be built at the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre at Nathan, also known as the QEII.

The complex was built for the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, and has was also the scene of Allan Langer's triumphant 2001 State of Origin comeback and the home of the Broncos for nearly a decade.

"When it (the news) came out this morning the girls were just absolutely so excited at this opportunity," Firebirds captain Laura Geitz said.

Netball Queensland says the facility won't just be about the Firebirds, but about nurturing up and coming stars and developing the game.

"What this facility will do will give us the flexibility to run our community netball programs, to run clinics, to develop our coaches and our umpires," CEO Catherine Clark said.

But next season the team will have to continue their juggling act of playing at the Convention Centre at South Bank and the Entertainment Centre in Boondall, with the new stadium not due to be complete for two years.
