Scorching winter temperatures draw huge crowds for Ekka

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend Ekka in Brisbane, as winter temperatures continue to soar above 30 degrees.

The traditional midway point of the Ekka is a public holiday in Brisbane, and typically sees the biggest crowds for the event.

They'll be greeted with picture-perfect weather, with an unseasonably warm top of 30 degrees expected and no sign of the annual westerlies that traditionally show up around Ekka time.

But people taking in the festivities are being advised to attend at night, when the temperatures will be slightly cooler. Temperatures are expected to drop to 16 degrees tonight, but will soar again to 32 degrees tomorrow.

Major events today include the annual Grand Parade, as well as old favourites like the woodchops, dog jumping and showjumping.

Cattle, sheep and horses may be best known for receiving the premier show awards at the Ekka, but it's the Siamese Fighting Fish who are making a splash in 2017.

More than 400 of the colourful little fish with the big attitudes were entered into the Royal Queensland Show this year.

They came from nine different countries and were critiqued by judges from Thailand and Sydney.

It was the first time in a decade the fish, the size of a pinky finger, had been included at the Ekka.
