Number of Queensland drivers running red lights in the thousands

Thousands of drivers in Queensland were caught running red lights across the state last year, ignoring fixed cameras and police warnings. 

More than 32,000 vehicles were caught driving through red lights across Queensland in the 12 months leading up to October last year.

Almost 30,000 of those were found in Brisbane alone, including 28,166 caught by fixed cameras and more than 1600 caught by police.

Over 1700 drivers were also seen running red lights on the Gold Coast.

“It’s just stupidity. Running a red light is so dangerous, not just for yourself but to everyone else on the road,” Kirsty Clinton from roadside assistance group RACQ.

“It’s not going to save you much time (and) chances are you’ll be stopped at the next red light.

“It could cost you $378 and three demerit points if you’re caught.”

Despite two new fixed red light speed cameras also being installed on the Gold Coast, hundreds of drivers have also been caught on dashcam footage running red lights and causing traffic chaos.

In vision of one incident, a driver running a red light is seen swerving away from an oncoming vehicle.

“They just kind of squeeze in a bit late, don’t they?” one driver told 9NEWS.

“That’s what you see all the time.”

Authorities have urged drivers to be wary when driving on the state’s roads and reduce their chance at being caught.
