Moment Queensland man caught alleged car thief after car drove through fence

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a resident in Mackay took down an alleged car thief after the teenager drove through a fence during a suburban joyride.

The suspected teen had abandoned the vehicle, an allegedly stolen Holden Rodeo, before jumping a garden fence.

It's then he was met by Paul Evans, who had heard the car screeching from his home.

"I had that feeling he was going to bolt for it, so I just ran down the stairs. And when he jumped the fence I just grabbed him," Mr Evans said.

The Mackay resident tackled the teen, holding him down until police arrived.

"I just went straight to the ground with him, and that's when the police officers jumped the fence.

"I was in the right spot at the right time."

A similar vehicle had been reported stolen from Mount Pleasant on October 10 and had been on authorities' radar for days.

The 19-year-old faces seven charges, including driving without a licence, common assault and obstructing police.

He is currently in police custody and will face court next week.

Mr Evans said the incident is one in many to affect the neighbourhood recently.

He said he's captured drag racing and other dangerous driving close to his home.

"It just takes one idiot having a joyride to ruin someone else's pride and joy," he said.
