Cairns man arrested for alleged child grooming

A 58-year-old Queensland man has been charged following a six month investigation into child grooming and sex offences.

The Cairns man was arrested as a result of Operation Uniform Kalahari, created to investigate the alleged grooming of at least eight young women in the Far North region between January and today.

The Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit detectives and police found the 58-year-old, who is believed to have exploited the girls on Sunday, June 5.

"It will be alleged the young girls, seven of which are aged under 16, were groomed, indecently assaulted and supplied with dangerous drugs including methylamphetamine and cannabis," police said.

The man was charged with 11 counts of supplying drugs to a minor, six counts of indecent treatment of a child and grooming among other drug related offences.

He appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody.

He will return to court August 3.

Police are currently providing support to the alleged victims and their families.

They are appealing for anyone else who may have been impacted or those with any information to come forward to assist with investigations.

"We will investigate all reports of offences against children, and arrest and charge alleged offenders within the full force of the law," Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Gooiker said.

"The immense bravery of victims' in these matters to come forward and speak to police, allows the QPS to track down these offenders and put them before the courts."
