Rescued koala and joey a spark of joy amid blaze horror

Out of the horror and devastation of the Queensland bushfires, a story to lift the spirits.

A koala and her joey were found in a bad way after the blazes that destroyed a huge area of bush at Canungra, in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The sad picture of them taken by Jimboomba cops of the pair sitting on a scorched, felled tree surrounded by blackened earth seemed to symbolise the plight of wildlife caught up in the bushfires.

Experts say it's too soon to estimate how many animals have been killed, but numbers are expected to be high.

The mum's fur was singed and suffering from smoke inhalation she was transported to the Queensland Wildlife Hospital.

There she was named Aisling and has responded well to treatment after initial fears she wouldn't make it.

The RSPCA's Michael Beatty said she was "much brighter" yesterday and is eating again.

Her bub, given the moniker Rupert, is suckling  well.
