Video footage has captured the first moments of a newborn southern right whale off the coast of Queensland.

More whales are expected to be spotted off Queensland's coast in the coming months as humpback whales make their annual migration journey north from Antarctica, to the warmer waters of Queensland to mate, give birth and care for their newborns.
Humpback whale season in Queensland is between June and September, with thousands of whales making the journey up the coast, stopping in famed whale watching locations like Hervey Bay, north of Brisbane.
Southern right whales, a type of baleen whale, typically migrate up the coast of New South Wales between May and September, peaking around July.
