A young Brisbane man has drowned while canoeing in Canada.

Bennett Zeller, 22, had been canoeing with a friend in Georgian Bay in Ontario when it capsized last Thursday.

Mr Zeller's friends paid tribute on social media after Canadian police found his body this morning (AEST).

"Today confirms the day we lost one of life's legends. You were a true inspiration and a good friend. We'll always miss you buddy," friend Zak McDonald wrote on Facebook.

"Bennett Zeller you were one good dude!!!," David J Fisher wrote.

Ontario authorities reportedly said the incident occurred less than a week after a 25-year-old Mexican man died after his canoe overturned, and that neither man was wearing a life jacket.

The other man in Mr Zeller's canoe was able to swim to shore, Blackburn News reports.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the family was being offered consular assistance.
