Wild Sydney winds cancel Brisbane flights

Up to 40 flights between Sydney and Brisbane have been cancelled due to wild winds battering Australia's east coast.

A Brisbane Airport spokeswoman said delays for flights not cancelled stretched from 30 minutes to two hours.

"Severe weather in a major port such as Sydney always has the potential for knock-on effects across the national flight network," the spokeswoman said.

She said while the winds continue there is potential for more flight delays and cancellations for Friday afternoon and evening.

Early on Friday, The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for parts of NSW.

Wind gusts in excess of 100km/h have been recorded in Sydney.
