Daniel Morcombe's inquest findings

DANIEL MORCOMBE INQUEST FINDINGS:

* Coroner Terry Ryan found the immediate police response was in line with policy at the time, despite concerns at the inquest that Daniel's disappearance had initially been treated as a teenage runaway.

* Given Daniel was likely killed within an hour of his abduction, his death could not have been prevented by police

* But "more could have been done" in the early investigation into the involvement of Brett Peter Cowan, who is now in jail for life for Daniel's murder.

* Mr Ryan noted Cowan was a known child sex offender and had admitted being in the Sunshine Coast area where Daniel disappeared.

* But Cowan was an "accomplished liar" and rebutting his "not strong" alibi was not possible with the evidence at the time.

* Claims made at the inquest by two police officers - that they were rebuffed when they raised Cowan as a suspect - could not be proven.

WHAT CORONER RECOMMENDED

* An independent review of high-risk missing persons cases or murders unsolved for 12 months.

* Faster return of remains to families.

* Both Queensland police and the state attorney-general are considering the findings.

WHAT CORONER INVESTIGATED

* Three points of reference - the first, which was answered by Cowan's conviction, was whether Daniel was deceased, and then how he died, when and where he died, and what caused his death.

* The second was the adequacy of the immediate Queensland Police Service response to the report that Daniel was missing.

* And finally, the adequacy of the police investigation into Daniel's disappearance.

INQUEST TIMELINE

* Began in 2010 and adjourned in early 2011 as police continued investigation.

* Police charged Cowan with murder and other offences in August 2011 after he confessed to undercover officers.

* In the same month Daniel's shoes and bones were found in bushland at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast.

* A jury found Cowan guilty in 2014 and he was sentenced to life in prison.

* In 2016 the inquest reopened briefly after Cowan exhausted his options to appeal the decision.

* It closed on Friday with the coroner's findings.
