Queensland's treasurer believes the federal government's moves to close some of Western Australia's remote indigenous communities is a major mistake.

Curtis Pitt says the Queensland government has good track record of delivering services to remote indigenous communities in his state.

But he says talk of closing remote communities in WA is clearly unacceptable to indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.

"Any suggestion that people can move on and move elsewhere is really not taking into consideration the very important nature of people's affinity with the land," Mr Pitt said.

"That obviously has been a real misstep from the Abbott government."
