Visible Qld police to deter Anzac terror

Queensland's police commissioner believes an increased visible police presence at the state's Anzac services will deter terrorists and troublemakers.

Ian Stewart's comments come after five young men were arrested at the weekend over an alleged Anzac Day terror plot in Melbourne.

Mr Stewart says while there's no direct intelligence to suggest a threat in Queensland, there will be hundreds more officers on duty during Anzac centenary commemorations than in previous years, with a deliberate focus on a visible presence.

"We would think if anyone is even thinking of making a nuisance of themselves or, even worse still, trying to do harm to a fellow Queenslander, that they'll be deterred by the fact that we will be out in force to ensure that security," he said.

Mr Stewart said officers would be ready for any situation, and specialist police would be deployed during larger events like the dawn service at Brisbane's Anzac Square.

He said the terrorist threat for Anzac Day in Queensland was rated as medium.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Queensland families should not be deterred by talks about possible terrorist threats.

"The best way that Queenslanders can show their support this Saturday for the ultimate sacrifice when people lost their lives for our state and our country is to show their respects," she said.

"There are over 300 services that will be happening across Queensland."
