The federal government has committed $5 million to undertake rail feasibility studies for two key lines in northern Australia.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss says the studies, in partnership with the Queensland and Northern Territory governments, will look at an upgrade of the Townsville-Mount Isa line and the construction of a new line between Mount Isa and Tennant Creek.

"These two rail lines have the potential to improve access to global markets for local producers and deliver economic growth to the entire region," Mr Truss said on Wednesday.
