A motorcyclist has died in a collision on Brisbane's southside, the third fatality on the state's roads within 24 hours.

The motorcycle collided with a turning ute at Moorooka about 5pm on Monday.

A 31-year-old man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital but died later, police said.

It follows a double fatality in a two-vehicle crash on the Gold Coast on Sunday night which closed the main highway for more than three hours.

A 53-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, both from the southern suburb of Bilinga, died when their south-bound car crossed onto the wrong side of the road and hit an oncoming vehicle.

The 47-year-old driver of the second car, a Wongawallan man, and an 88-year-old NSW man were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
