Support for Qld league player's family

Offers of support are pouring in for the family of Queensland league player James Ackerman, whose organs have been donated after his death from an on-field head injury.

The rugby league community is rallying around the 25-year-old's wife and two young children, with a trust fund set up and plans in place for a major fundraiser involving the Brisbane Broncos and the Melbourne Storm later this year.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons front-rower died in hospital on Monday after being injured in a tackle against the Norths Devils at Bishop Park in Brisbane on Saturday.

"That was one of the family's major concerns - about the organs - and that is definitely happening and obviously someone is going to benefit from that," Falcons chairman Ashley Robinson has told the ABC.

He said Ackerman was a man of few words but a real leader on the field.

"The players loved him ... and his opposition loved him. He was just one of those guys," Mr Robinson said.

He said Ackerman's young family could expect a mountain of support, with offers of financial assistance already coming in.

"I had a guy calling me yesterday wanting to donate $20,000," he said, adding there had also been offers to help with funeral costs.
