Qld troops return after Fiji deployment

Queensland-based defence personnel have arrived in Brisbane after spending the month helping communities in cyclone-ravaged Fiji.

The Queensland-based soldiers travelled back on HMAS Canberra, which docked at the Port of Brisbane on Wednesday morning.

The troops were part of Operation Fiji Assist, a mission which provided humanitarian and disaster relief to the Pacific Island nation in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The cyclone tore through the country in late February, claiming more than 40 lives and leaving thousands homeless.

Operation Fiji Assist has already delivered some 550 tonnes in humanitarian aid.

The troops have spent the entire month clearing debris, restoring power, purifying water, delivering food and providing emergency shelter.

Once finishing unloading vehicles and equipment, HMAS Canberra will return to its base in Sydney.

About 200 ADF personnel are continuing humanitarian and disaster relief work in Suva.
